Chepstowe Garrison > Chepstowe's Re-enactment Information
The town of Chepstow, in south Wales, is dominated by a medieval castle. Once home to the Chepstow garrison, the castle is the oldest stone fortress in Britain. It has witnessed plenty of history, and was built by William the Conqueror shortly after his successful invasion from Normandy. It was William who created the first Chepstow garrison, a band of soldiers tasked with guarding this important crossing of the River Wye.
As time passed Chepstow castle was extended by its various owners. King Edward I, known for his successful wars in Wales and Scotland, visited the castle in 1284. Medieval life has continues to this day in the castle, with re-enactment societies holding regular displays as the Chepstow garrison. Knights in armour can still be seen preparing for battle, and going about their everyday business.
Another re-enactment is that of the Civil War period. The Chepstow garrison of Royalists were besieged twice and it finally surrendered in 1648. After that the castle was used as an artillery store and a prison. It had reached the end of its life as a military fortification, because the methods of warfare had changed.
